Boeing and the Washington state aerospace industry

The aerospace industry is a critical part of Washington state’s economy. Jay has been working in Congress to make sure that this sector continues to be an important source of employment for families in the Pacific Northwest. Of note, he has lobbied for Washington state to be the assembly location for the new 7E7 airplane and fought the illegal subsidies that European governments provide to Airbus. He also has advocated for health care, workforce and tax policies that benefit Boeing workers and their families. Below are some highlights of his efforts:

Jay Inslee (WA-01) issued the following statement: “Although this is a disappointing decision by the Bush Administration, it does not change two fundamental truths. First, the Air Force simply can no longer rely on an archaic tanker fleet. Second, the 767 is a ready-to-go, fantastic platform perfectly suited for the job. Fighting For Boeing Worker Retraining Funds

[ March 2000 ]

Late last year, U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (WA-01) found that Washington State was halting payments to thousands of laid-off Boeing workers – payments which they had been assured they would receive while retraining for a new job. The payments are similar to unemployment benefits, and people need them to help pay the bills while they are enrolled in a retraining program. Inslee took the lead in working with other Members of Congress from Washington to ensure that workers received the retraining assistance that was promised to them by the government. Together, Inslee and his colleagues were successful in obtaining a supplemental National Reserve Grant (NRG) of $9.8 million to help these families. This grant covered the thousands of laid-off workers through the holidays, and until March 31, 2000.

For a long-term solution to this problem, Inslee worked with the Washington delegation to urge the U.S. Department of Labor to determine whether the estimated 23,000 laid-off Boeing workers qualified for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). Ultimately, the Department of Labor granted the needed help for our communities.

Jay Inslee (WA-01) gave the following speech today in Congress in opposition to European government subsidies to Airbus: “Mr. Speaker, it appears again that European governments may be ignoring their agreements to stop subsidizing Airbus. The British government's decision to make a loan of $868 million to Airbus for the development of another jumbo jet clearly flies in the face of the concept that the WTO rules are designed to end government subsidies to Airbus. . . ."
