HELPS HOUSE PASS AMT RELIEF FOR
MORE THAN 26,000 8TH DISTRICT TAXPAYERS
Fiscally Responsible Bill Doesn't Add to National Debt
WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. John Tanner praised the House of Representatives for voting to relieve the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) for 25 million Americans, including more than 26,000 taxpayers in the 8th Congressional district. The House passed an AMT relief bill that adheres to the pay-as-you-go rules championed by Tanner and other Blue Dog Democrats who do not want to add to the national debt.
“If Congress didn’t take this action, taxes would go up this year for more than 26,000 taxpayers in our district,” Tanner said. “I am proud of the House for fixing this AMT problem in a fiscally responsible way so that our children and grandchildren do not have to pay an additional debt burden.”
Tanner, representing the 8th district in West and Middle Tennessee, serves on the House Ways and Means Committee that deals with tax matters. He also serves on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and is chairman of the U.S. delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
