Chabot Again Named “Taxpayers Hero” by Council for Citizens Against Government Waste
September 12, 2008

Washington, D.C. -- Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati) has again been named a “Taxpayers Hero” by the non-partisan Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW).  Chabot was recognized for consistently voting to reduce wasteful federal spending, reform the earmark process and provide tax relief to working Americans. Chabot’s score of 97 percent ranked him among the top 14 members of the House.

“It is an honor to be named a Taxpayer Hero for working to eliminate wasteful spending and protecting the interests of taxpayers,” said Chabot. “I will continue to fight for a balanced budget, more transparency in federal spending and lower taxes so American families can keep more of the money they work so hard to earn.”

The “Taxpayers Hero” award is presented to members of Congress who achieve an 80 percent or higher on CCAGW’s annual Congressional Ratings. The rating is based on 100 roll call votes affecting fiscal policy in 2007, the first session of the 110th Congress.  After analyzing the votes, CCAGW assigns a score to every member based on their support for reducing federal spending and taxes.

Chabot joins Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) and Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) as the only members of the Ohio congressional delegation to score above 80 percent in 2007 (due to his special election to Congress in December of 2007, Congressman Latta only participated in 1 of the 100 votes).  The average score in the House was a mere 30 percent.

One of the key votes recognized by CCAGW as being in the interests of taxpayers was the Chabot-Andrews amendment to eliminate taxpayer funding for logging roads built in the Tongass National Forest.  Chabot helped lead successful passage of the amendment in the House.

The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste is an arm of Citizens Against Government Waste, the nation’s largest non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse and mismanagement in government.  More information about the 2007 ratings can be found at www.ccagw.org.

Since first being elected to Congress, Chabot has been consistently recognized by non-partisan taxpayer groups, including CCAGW and the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) for his votes to protect tax dollars and limit government spending.
