March 2008

Congressman John Boozman urges all Arkansans to file their 2007 Federal Income Tax to be eligible to receive money from the economic stimulus package.

In May 2008 the Treasury Department will begin sending out money to taxpayers as part of the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008.  President Bush signed H.R. 5140 in February of this year hoping to boost the economy with more than $150 billion to more than 130 million American households.

“Working families and small business owners in Arkansas will reap direct benefits from this plan, including incentives which will allow owners to invest in new equipment for their businesses. This will result in the creation of more local jobs, which will increase our local economy," Boozman said.

You're eligible to receive money from the economic stimulus package if you have a valid Social Security Number and show an income of at least $3,000 on your federal tax return. This law also allows Social Security recipients, recipients of certain veterans' benefits and Railroad Retirement benefits to count those benefits towards the qualifying income requirement of $3,000.

Eligible recipients will get between $300 and $600. Families will get between $600 and $1,200. Those with children will get an additional $300 for each qualifying child.

Getting your portion of the money is easy, just file a 2007 federal tax return. Even if you haven’t been required to file in the past, you need to this year in order to qualify for your portion of the stimulus plan.

In Arkansas there are several Tax Aide sites that can help you file your taxes for free. The deadline to file your federal tax return is April 15th unless you aren’t required to file and are doing so just to get your funds from the economic stimulus package then the deadline is October 15th.

The Internal Revenue Service has more information about the economic stimulus payments. Learn more by clicking here.

Economic stimulus payments will be issued by the IRS beginning May 2. The IRS is issuing stimulus payments based on your Social Security number. To find out when your payment will be mailed click here.

In May the FBI sent out a consumer alert, warning of scams targeting economic stimulus checks. The agency says tax payers are being targeted via email and asking for bank account information. The IRS doesn't initiate communication through emails and doesn't request personal information through emails.
