Pryce Honored for Career Leadership on Women’s Issues
Colleagues, Women’s Policy Think Tank Salute Pryce’s Service

Washington, DC – Last night, Congresswoman Deborah Pryce (R-Columbus) was recognized by her colleagues on the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, and Women’s Policy, Inc. (WPI) – a non-profit, non-partisan champion of women’s issues -- at the 2008 Congressional Gala in Washington. Pryce, who in August announced she would not seek reelection to Congress, was saluted for her fifteen years of tireless advocacy on issues impacting women’s health and safety.

Pryce, a former Franklin County Ohio Municipal Court Judge and prosecutor, is co-chair of the Caucus’s Task Force on Women and Justice. The Caucus for Women’s Issues provides an opportunity for its members to work together in a cooperative, bipartisan way to meaningfully address the myriad issues impacting women. At the event, Caucus members unveiled their legislative agenda for the remainder of 2008.

At the end of the evening, Pryce was lauded by her colleagues for her advocacy on women’s issues, ranging from human trafficking to adoption reform. Said Pryce of the tribute to her, “I have always believed that my most meaningful legislative victories were bipartisan in nature – it means the fundamental strength of the idea prevailed, not the strength of the party supporting it. And nearly every legislative success I’ve enjoyed during my time in Congress came with the bipartisan support of the women who belong to the Caucus for Women’s Issues.”

“The Caucus is truly a venue where Members shed their partisan skins, and roll up their sleeves to tackle the issues that impact the lives of women and their families,” Pryce added.

Pryce’s Record of Leadership on Women’s Issues

  • Lead sponsor of a law enacted in 2006 to stop violence against women by increasing access to services for women and victims and further investing in current policies to reduce rape, stalking, and domestic violence;
  • Spearheaded efforts to secure $100 million to speed up the processing of DNA rape kits amid backlog;
  • Author of law enacted in 2006 to support victims of sex trafficking in Ohio and throughout the U.S., and give local law enforcement tools to go after the demand – the pimps and johns who fuel the sex trade in America;
  • Spearheaded legislation to help cover the expenses of those who adopt children – known as the Hope for Children Act – through a $10,000 tax credit;
  • Lead author of a law supporting education and health opportunities for Afghan women and children;
  • Secured $450,000 for Columbus Children’s Hospital Center for Child and Family Advocacy. The Center is an unprecedented relationship between service providers for child victims and adult victims of family violence.  It is the first center in the U.S. with co-located child abuse and domestic violence services under one roof.  Pryce secured $850,000 in operational costs for the Center; and
  • Secured over $2 million for a Gynecological Cancer Research Center at The Ohio State University.
