California's 33rd District
Description
California's ethnically diverse 33rd Congressional District is located entirely within Los Angeles County. The 33rd has a portion of central Los Angeles, and includes all of Culver City within its borders, as well as parts of unincorporated L.A. County.
The district begins on the west about a mile inland from Venice Beach, and spreads to Figueroa Avenue on the East in Los Angeles. The District spreads North to take in Koreatown, Hancock Park, the Wilshire corridor and the "Miracle Mile" district, Little Armenia, Hollywood, Los Feliz and Silver Lake.
The 33rd District includes the neighborhoods of Baldwin Hills, Ladera Heights, Mid-Wilshire, View Park, and Windsor Hills. Noteworthy landmarks and locations within the district include Exposition Park, LA Coliseum, Sony Studios, University of Southern California, Grauman's Chinese Theater, the Kodak Theater (home of the annual Academy Awards ceremonies), West Los Angeles College and the Kenneth Hahn Regional Park.
African-Americans, Latinos and Asian-Americans account for more than 75% of the population, but the 33rd District has no single ethnic majority. Several major demographic shifts have changed the makeup of the 33rd. The first was in the 1960s when the district's Jewish population migrated to the areas northwest and the district's center became predominantly African-American. Throughout the 1990's, and continuing into the new millennium, there has been an influx of Latinos, who now represent the largest sector of the District's population.
The 33rd District has a solid middle class, as well as some sharply contrasting areas like wealthy Hancock Park in the center-north area of the district, and a small low-income section on the northern tip of South Los Angeles. Though the 33rd is no longer the film production hub of the past, entertainment continues to be a significant factor in its overall economy as does the healthcare industry and Hollywood tourism.
