GRAND OPENING, ROBERT H. MOORE SENIOR CITIZENS HOUSING COMPLEX

Brooklyn, New York - Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns will join the board of BEC New Communities, Dan Mathew, General Manager and CEO of Robert H. Moore Senior Citizens Housing Complex, Senator Velmanette Montgomery, Assembly Member Annette Robinson and Council Member Albert Vann to celebrate the grand opening of the $9.1 Million Senior Citizens Housing Complex on Friday, October 24, 2008 at 2:00 p. m. The event will take place at One Vernon Avenue on the corner of Nostrand Avenue.

"Securing affordable housing in Brooklyn is a pervasive problem that affects many families, and the elderly are especially vulnerable," stated Rep. Towns. "I am excited to see this magnificent complex finally come to fruition. With its 59 units and state of the art facilities, residents will have an opportunity to rest, enjoy and partake in a comfortable environment, which they so deserve."

With Congressman Ed Towns' support, BEC New Communities was able to secure $9.1 million in federal funding from the U. S. Department of Housing Urban Development (HUD).  At the time that this project was conceived, 30% of Brooklyn's population was seniors and only 10% of affordable housing units were available for the elderly.  As a result of this and other concerns, the Robert H. Moore Senior Citizens Housing Complex was constructed.

Dan Mathew, General Manager and CEO of Robert H. Moore Senior Citizens Housing Complex concluded, "This has been a long road and an uphill battle, but there is definitely a bright, shining light at the end of this tunnel. We have a beautiful, modernized facility that will be home to 59 families. I cannot thank Congressman Towns enough for his support and hard work to make this dream a reality."

BEC New Communities HDFC, Inc. is a community based organization that manages affordable condominiums and affordable rental housing in Brooklyn. They successfully developed and marketed over 500 units and continue to manage 400 units, which include 81 condominiums.  This application was approved by HUD in November of 2002.
