Agriculture Farm Bill Ginseng
In the Senate, I have led the effort to
support ginseng growers by introducing the Ginseng Harvest
Labeling Act with Senator Kohl and Representative Obey. This
legislation would require country-of-harvest labeling for
raw ginseng and the disclosure of this information for any
imported ginseng at the port of entry.
These new requirements would make it harder for lower quality
imported ginseng, often with higher levels of pesticides and
other chemicals, to free-load off Wisconsin ginseng’s reputation
for quality. I was pleased that language similar to the Ginseng
Harvest Labeling Act was included in the Senate Farm Bill.
We need to protect the excellent reputation of Wisconsin’s
ginseng growers.
