Rep. Susan Davis Speaks Out Against Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal Development Proposal

Congressional Delegation Unites in Opposing Prop. B

San Diego, Ca. – Congresswoman Susan Davis today joined her House colleagues from San Diego in opposing a proposed deck to cover the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal.  The congressional delegation held a press conference at the terminal to urge a vote against Proposition B, which would allow the construction of 40-foot platform above the terminal.

“The Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal has created thousands of good paying jobs right here in our community,” said Davis.  “These jobs will be threatened by this development.  In light of what has happened to our economy over the past few weeks, this is not the time to be taking jobs away from San Diego.”

One by one, Reps. Davis, Duncan Hunter, Brian Bilbray, and Bob Filner spoke out against the Proposition B and proposed development project, which has received little support outside the individuals who financed the ballot proposition.

Proposition B would allow a potentially multi-million dollar development on the 96-acre cargo port.  The proposal most talked about is a deck built over existing port operations that could be used for commercial purposes, including a multi-use sports complex.

Opponents have concerns about the impact the development could have on the port.  Davis said she has heard from waterfront business owners who have expressed how devastating it would be if the measure passes.

In September, the San Diego congressional delegation sent a letter dated to Chairman Michael Bixler of the Port of San Diego opposing Prop. B.

Proposition B goes before the voters of San Diego on November 4.  Opponents include Mayor Jerry Sanders, labor groups, environmentalists, and Navy Secretary Donald Winter.
