WASHINGTON, D.C. —The National Farmers Union has recognized House Committee on Small Business Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez for her leadership on rural small business issues and renewable energy development. She was presented yesterday with their 2008 Golden Triangle Award, the highest honor bestowed by this national organization representing approximately 250,000 farmers and ranchers. Chairwoman Velázquez has been honored twice with this distinction awarded annually in recognition of efforts to improve opportunities for rural small firms.

“Rural entrepreneurs are an integral part of local communities and our national economy,” said Chairwoman Velázquez. “As we focus on finding solutions to make us less dependent on foreign oil, these small businesses will help grow the economy and create green collar jobs with homegrown renewable energy.”

With small businesses accounting for 90 percent of all rural firms, Chairwoman Velázquez has held more than a dozen committee hearings on issues important to the agricultural sector. As part of her commitment to rural entrepreneurship, she worked to ensure the Farm Bill contained a disaster assistance safety net for producers. The Chairwoman has also promoted the important role small businesses play in renewable energy development, resulting in job opportunities and economic vitality for many farming communities.

“It is an honor to receive this award from the National Farmers Union. By addressing the challenges rural entrepreneurs face, we improve opportunities for family farmers to prosper, grow and benefit their communities,” Chairwoman Velázquez said.
