Chairwoman Velázquez Honored

by American Optometric Association

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), Chair of the House Committee on Small Business, was honored yesterday evening by the American Optometric Association (AOA) at the organization’s Congressional Advocacy Conference.  The Congresswoman was presented the AOA’s Health Care Leadership Award for her continued efforts to address issues impacting small business health care providers.

“Congresswoman Velazquez is a true leader in Congress on health care issues,” said Andrea Thau, O.D., member of the AOA Board of Trustees and past president of the New York State Optometric Association. “She listens to the concerns of doctors and patients from across her district, and is a worthy recipient of the 2008 Health Care Leadership Award.”

While presenting Chairwoman Velazquez with the award, the AOA also highlighted her support of the National Health Service Corps Improvement Act (HR 1884).  The bill makes optometrists eligible for the National Health Service Corps student loan repayment programs, and provides tax incentives for medical professionals to practice in underserved areas.

“Optometry professionals are an important part of the nation’s thriving small business economy,” said Chairwoman Velázquez. “AOA members provide crucial services to our communities, and I remain committed to ensuring they receive the professional support and respect they deserve.”
