CONGRESSMAN RANGEL GETS
"A" GRADE FOR VOTES ON VETERANS

WASHINGTON - Congressman Charles Rangel has received an "A" grade from the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) for his votes in the 110th Congress in support of legislation affecting Middle East war veterans.

"We are proud to report that the 110th Congress has achieved historic success on behalf of troops and veterans," the organization said.

The organization rated members of Congress based on their votes on important veterans' legislation, most notably the Post-9/11 GI Bill which provided enhanced education benefits for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The nonpartisan group also highlighted members' votes on bills which provided full funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs, increased benefits for disabled veterans, and improved treatments for traumatic brain injuries.

"The manner in which soldiers and veterans of these wars are being treated is nearly criminal," Congressman Rangel said. "The legislation passed in the 110th Congress is the least we could do as a country to say thank you for their sacrifices."

Congressman Rangel has a long record of advocacy on behalf of veterans and active-duty members of the U.S military. Earlier this year he shepherded through the Ways and Means Committee the Heroes Earnings Assistance and Relief Tax Act (HEART ACT), which provides tax relief to servicemen and women and their families. The bill was enacted into law last summer.
