Women |
As a member of the Congressional Caucus on Women’s Issues and a chair of the task force on Women in Business and the Economy, I am dedicated to the wide range of issues affecting American women. My work in this area includes ensuring that women-owned businesses have access to federal contracts and support for the Family and Medical Leave Act, which guarantees women access to maternity leave or to care for a family member. Additionally, I am a consistent supporter of a woman’s right to choose and access to contraception.
As a woman in Congress, I want to use my position to positively influence the future generation of female leaders, and that’s why I’m leading a committee of Congresswomen in a program called “Girls Rock the House.” 5th grade girls from all over the country will come to Washington to learn about and participate in the political process. These girls, at a time when they are most impressionable, will be inspired and empowered when they see how they can have an impact in our government. Girls will be selected through a competition in which they submit bills on topics they are particularly passionate about. The writer of the top bill from each district will come to DC for an awards dinner, a behind-the-scenes look at Congress, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about government first hand. Details will be listed here when the competition begins.
