FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Kevin Lawlor, 202/225-1880 September 25, 2007 www.tauscher.house.gov Rep. Ellen Tauscher Introduces Legislation Easing Export Controls for Civilian Aircraft Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Ellen Tauscher, along with Rep. Donald Manzullo (R-Ill.) introduced legislation that would provide export controls of certain items relating to civil aircraft. The legislation comes on the heels of a bipartisan letter delivered to the President signed by Rep. Tauscher, Chairman of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee, and over thirty of her colleagues requesting that the President provide a clearer direction to the aerospace industry regarding the export of civil aircraft, parts and components. Rep. Tauscher has long backed export control policies that advance U.S. national security and foreign policy interests, strengthen the U.S. industrial base, ensure defense cooperation with our allies, and reduce impediments to legitimate trade. “For years now the State Department has failed to recognize these exemptions and because of this failure industry has faced an uphill battle and a marketplace overwrought with uncertainty,” said Rep. Ellen Tauscher. “In the Congress we are working to help provide clarity and predictability to this sector of the economy and the President needs to do the same if we are going to see any progress. Easing export controls where warranted is a critical factor that improves our national security and creates more American jobs.”
