Unemployment Rate Rises to 6.1 Percent, Highest Rate Since September 2003

Marks Eighth Consecutive Month of Job Losses

Washington D.C. - Today, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the unemployment rate rose from 5.7 to 6.1 percent in August, the highest rate in nearly five years. Employers cut 84,000 jobs, exceeding economists’ expectations. Overall, the number of unemployed persons in the United States increased by 592,000 in the month of August to a total of 9.4 million – nearly twice the total population in the state of Maryland.

"These numbers are only the latest example of the failed policies of President Bush and this administration,” said Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (D-MD). “Actions speak louder than words and the actions of this sluggish economy are speaking volumes compared to the rhetoric coming from President Bush and his administration. As people throughout my district and the country continue to suffer, it is clear that we are in desperate need of a comprehensive, long-term approach to revitalize our stagnant economy. I am eager to work with my House colleagues in the coming weeks on another economic stimulus package and other measures to return our country on a path of continued prosperity."

Recently, Congress passed two critical measures to help America’s workers during these difficult economic times. In June, unemployment benefits were extended for an additional 13 weeks. Then in July, the federal minimum wage was increased to $6.55 an hour, the first increase in 10 years.
