Cardin, Mikulski Announce New Funding to Maintain Allegany County Roads

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Benjamin L. Cardin (both D-MD) announced today that the USDA Rural Development program has awarded the Town of Lonaconing a $33,500 Community Facility Grant to purchase equipment to maintain local roads in Allegany County.

“This grant is about protecting Lonaconing’s families and children. The new equipment will help keep Lonaconing’s roads clear, and its residents safe,” said Senator Mikulski. “I will continue to fight in the U.S. Senate for grants like this one that support Maryland communities.”

“I am proud that we are able to help rural Maryland communities such as Lonaconing keep up with essential operations that affect the day to day lives of citizens.” said Senator Cardin. “This federal investment will help to provide vital services to Allegany County such as maintaining clear and safe roads.”

The Community Facility Grant will be used to purchase a new, multipurpose Ford F-450 that will serve as a dump truck, snow plow, and spreader. This will allow Lonaconing and Allegany County to better maintain and clear snow from roads, which is essential for safe passage of police and medical emergency vehicles during the winter months. Lonaconing is located on Route 36 which is a key thoroughfare through eastern Allegany County. The town of will be contributing $11,229 for this project. Lonaconing has a median household income of $27,434.

The USDA Rural Development grant program was created to improve the economy and quality of life in rural America. It helps support essential services and infrastructure improvements, and promotes rural emergency response to help protect the lives.
