DOLE WORKING TO ENSURE EFFECTIVE HURRICANE RESPONSE

September 4th, 2008 - Washington, D.C. - As severe weather approaches the North Carolina coast, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole is working with federal and state officials to coordinate an effective response.

“We’re working hard to ensure the right assets and response teams are in place to effectively manage the situation in advance of these storms,” said Dole. “Right now, it is important for everyone in the storms’ paths to take the necessary precautions to be ready for Hanna and potentially for Ike.”

“As a former President of the American Red Cross, I know how important proper planning is to saving lives and preventing injuries and property damage. I encourage all North Carolinians to have an evacuation route planned and assemble emergency supplies like food, water, and medicine for their families.”

Today, Dole spoke with Department of Homeland Security Undersecretary for Federal Emergency Management R. David Paulison, who heads the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to discuss FEMA’s emergency response efforts, including the pre-positioning of federal assets and supplies for North Carolina. She has also reached out to North Carolina Governor Mike Easley in preparation for coordinating federal and state relief efforts.

Earlier today, Dole’s staff was briefed on federal preparedness initiatives by DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff and Under Secretary Paulison, and has also been in contact with the American Red Cross to discuss humanitarian response efforts and the pre-positioning of supplies in North Carolina. Her staff is also in close contact with state and local officials.
