Hot Topic - Hurricane Preparedness
June 1 marks the first day of the official hurricane season, and it is critical that families and businesses in North Carolina are as prepared as possible. According to an American Red Cross national survey, only seven percent of Americans have taken the necessary steps to prepare for an emergency or disaster. Planning ahead saves lives, and I strongly encourage North Carolinians to take the following actions recommended by the Red Cross:
1. Families should assemble or buy a disaster supplies kit containing at least three days of provisions in an easy-to-carry container. It is important to check that stock every six months and replace expired items.
2. Each person should know how to reach family members, including an out-of-area contact, and know where to meet if they are unable to go home.
3. Families should learn about what resources are available to them and what types of disasters are most likely to occur where they live. They should also consider taking first aid and CPR courses.
