Issues & Legislation
  Issue - Healthcare

Too often, too many North Carolinians do not have the healthcare coverage they need. Dramatic increases in healthcare costs have forced many employers to either increase worker co-payments or drop coverage altogether. People tell me that they are frustrated because they feel as though their health plans are more concerned about the bottom line than providing quality healthcare. Doctors tell me they spend more time filling out paperwork than seeing patients. It’s clear our healthcare system needs reform, starting with medical malpractice reform. We have a healthcare crisis before us. Doctors are being forced to practice defensive medicine and order excessive tests and procedures to protect themselves from lawsuits. Other doctors are leaving North Carolina and moving where caps are helping to keep insurance premiums down. This is simply unacceptable.

I’ll fight for affordable, quality healthcare and work to help provide access to healthcare for the thousands of North Carolinians who have been locked out of the traditional healthcare system. And I’ll continue working to help provide seniors that rely on Medicare for their health coverage with the prescription drugs they need. I support efforts to set up association health plans so small businesses can take advantage of economies of scale – leveraging together to buy affordable coverage. And I support health tax credits for employers to help them purchase insurance for their employees. Furthermore, we need to expand Medical Savings Accounts so more workers can get affordable healthcare by using tax free dollars.
