Ileana Ros-Lehtinen visiting with Key Largo Fire Rescue & Emergency Medical Service (11/14/2008) The Key Largo Fire Rescue & Emergency Medical Services District was hand-delivered $225,848 by Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.  The grant was provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for new protective equipment, increased training opportunities, and state of the art long-range radios.  

“The brave men and women of Key Largo Fire Rescue, a volunteer force, deserve the best possible equipment available to them,” says Ros-Lehtinen, “These funds will go a long way to improve the department’s inter-operability and readiness.”

Smitty, a sub adult Loggerhead Sea Turtle, was released just North of the Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon. Admitted in January 2008, the turtle had been found floating and was unable to dive. Tests indicated an infection causing the problem and treatment was antibiotics and vitamins. Participating in the release was Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Turtle Hospital Director Richie Moretti.

Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen with Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Schafer Newman, a South Florida resident and one of Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen’s Service Academy nominees, was recently appointed to the United Stares Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland. Schafer, a Senior at St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, Delaware, is involved in community service projects such as Habitat for Humanity, and has been on the soccer, swimming, crew, and cross country teams. He follows in the footsteps of his grandfather and uncle, both of them veterans who served our nation honorably. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen was on Key Biscayne Monday at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center. Part of her visit included learning how to load a dolphin onto a stretcher. Ileana and Dexter Lehtinen delivered toys to special needs children at various public schools in Miami-Dade County this past Holiday season. The Lehtinen's have made it a family tradition to visit different schools and deliver toys to children with special needs during this time of year. This year, their daughters, Amanda Michelle and Patricia Marie, could not accompany them as they were finishing their final exams at their universities. Mr. Puertas, who resides in Miami, lost both legs in the war but is now able to walk due to orthopedic surgery and the therapy he received at Walter Reed. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and her husband, Dexter Lehtinen, visited Huber Parsons, Jr., who is recovering from wounds suffered while on patrol in Baquba, Iraq.  Huber, who is part of an Army Stryker Brigade, was seriously wounded last week after his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb. The driver of the vehicle was killed and Huber is seriosly wounded and recovering from several operations at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington. Huber, along with his brothers Bill and Charlie are all serving in Iraq as part of a Stryker Brigade
