Rahall Introduces National Miner's Day Resolution

Continuing his lifelong advocacy for the American miner, U.S. Rep. Nick J. Rahall (D-WV) introduced legislation, H. Res. 1006, in the U.S. House of Representatives today supporting the goals and ideals of a "National Miner's Day."

"Throughout our Nation's history, the American miner has risked life and limb in order to produce the raw materials that fuel our economy, the energy that heats our homes, and the resources that ensure our security," said Rahall. "Without these selfless and dedicated miners, American society would never have flourished, nor would it continue to function. It is fitting, therefore, that we recognize and honor these brave workers who have served our Nation quietly and faithfully for so many years."

As a Congressional leader on mining-related issues, Rahall introduced the National Miner's Day resolution to celebrate and honor the contributions of miners and encourage the people of the United States to participate in local and National activities celebrating the contributions of American miners. U.S. Rep. Alan Mollohan (D-WV) is an original cosponsor of the resolution.

This Friday, February 29th, Congressman Rahall will be at Tamarack in Beckley, Raleigh County, at 1 p.m., where he will introduce New York Times best-selling author Homer Hickam at a book-signing event for Hickam's latest book, "Red Helmet." A native West Virginian and former coal miner, Hickam has been a leading proponent for establishing a national day of recognition for American miners.

"In West Virginia, we have long understood the immense value and importance of the labor of our coal miners," continued Rahall. "I am proud to be joined by my colleague from West Virginia, U.S. Rep. Alan Mollohan, in support of this resolution-sought by Homer Hickam and many West Virginians-that pays tribute to the contributions that miners have made to America throughout our history."
