Putnam Statement on Democrats’ No-Energy Energy Bill

September 16, 2008

  • “Tonight, House Democrats refused to answer the American people’s call for an ‘all-of-the-above’ energy strategy, instead choosing political expedience ahead of the needs of hard-working American families.”
  • “The Democrat no-energy energy bill doesn’t even come close to delivering the ‘all of the above’ energy solution the American people are demanding.”

WASHINGTON – Rep. Adam Putnam (R-FL), Chairman of the House Republican Conference, issued the following statement after House Democrats’ no-energy energy bill passed by a vote of 236-189:

“Tonight, House Democrats refused to answer the American people’s call for an ‘all-of-the-above’ energy strategy, instead choosing political expedience ahead of the needs of hard-working American families.

“From word one, the Democrat no-energy energy bill embodies the rhetoric-first, solutions-last brand of leadership that has made this Democratic Congress the most unpopular in our nation’s history. By failing to provide states with the opportunity to share in the revenues generated by offshore drilling, the bill gives governors and state legislatures no incentive whatsoever to opt-in. This is what prompted one Senate Democrat to declare the bill ‘dead on arrival.’

“The Democrat no-energy energy bill doesn’t even come close to delivering the ‘all of the above’ energy solution the American people are demanding. Not only does this legislation permanently lock up much of our vast deep ocean resources, it does absolutely nothing to promote clean-coal technologies and emission-free nuclear. This sham creates excessive hurdles in developing our nearly two trillion barrels of oil shale in the Mountain West states and discourages the expansion of our refining capacity. What’s worse, the bill raises taxes and mandates an unrealistic, job-killing, one-size-fits-all electricity standard that will lead to a spike in prices for consumers.

“And when Democrats had an opportunity to vote for the truly bipartisan Abercrombie-Peterson energy bill that contains meaningful steps to increase the supply of American-made energy, they voted it down. Their decision to vote down this bipartisan bill is proof positive that Democrats are not interested in real solutions for the American people, only political cover in an election year.

“House Republicans will not be deterred in our efforts to advance meaningful energy legislation that gives the American people more access to all forms of our vast resources and bridges the gap in moving toward alternative and renewable energy forms without raising taxes. We will continue to demand an up-or-down vote on the American Energy Act, the only bill that delivers an ‘all of the above’ solution.”
