Woolsey Rejects Spending Package Over Coastal Drilling | September 24, 2008 | |
| Washington, DC – Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey today voted against a government spending bill after a moratorium on coastal drilling was dropped from the final proposal. Without the moratorium in place, both coasts could be opened to expanded drilling, with operations as close as three miles offshore. The moratorium was removed after President Bush threatened to veto the legislation, which will fund government operations at current levels through March.
“By removing a long standing, and common sense, moratorium on coastal drilling, this legislation gives in to the irresponsible tactics of President Bush, who would rather shut down the government than develop a comprehensive energy strategy.
“Let’s be clear, coastal drilling won’t bring a bit of relief from high gas prices, and it won’t make a dent in addressing our nation’s long term energy needs. In fact, it’ll move us away from a comprehensive energy strategy by simply prolonging our dependence on oil and fossil fuels. It’s time to get serious about moving our country towards energy independence by committing ourselves to clean, efficient, alternative energy sources, instead of giving in to a president who would rather throw a temper tantrum than stand up to his friends in Big Oil.” |
