(CIU). Dr. Jamkhandi was recently honored by the Open World Leadership Center at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC for his international exchange programs in southern West Virginia.

“In today's world, cultural understanding is essential to our security and our economy,” said Rahall. “Thanks to the pioneering efforts of Dr. Jamkhandi, southern West Virginians are making new friendships and business connections with people from all over the world. I am thrilled Open World recognized “Jammy” for his efforts to increase international understanding here in southern West Virginia.”

In 1988, Dr. Jamkhandi established the CIU to internationalize Bluefield State College’s curriculum through a variety of activities including forums on international affairs, international musical and dance performances, food buffets, and student and faculty exchanges between Bluefield State College and former Communist countries.

As president of the CIU, Dr. Jamkhandi has introduced many visitors to the American and West Virginian way of life, professions, and government. Recent initiatives of the CIU include the forging of sister city relations between Princeton,  , and Yoshkar Ola, the capital of the Republic of Mari El in Russia;  sister state relations between West Virginia and the Republic of Komi, Russia; and, sister city relations between Bluefield, West Virginia and Tsalenjikha, Republic of Georgia.

“Fostering strong ties with visiting students, scholars, and professionals is essential to the United States’ ongoing efforts to spread peace and democracy across the globe,” said Rahall. “Dr. Jamkhandi’s work truly makes our State and our Nation proud.”
