Crime Victims In West Virginia Receive $2,621,000 Grant

U.S. Rep. Nick J. Rahall (D-WV) announced a grant of over $2.5 million to the West Virginia Crime Victim Compensation Fund today from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office for Victims of Crime. The grant provides funds from the Crime Victims Fund, created by the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA), to enhance State victim compensation payments to eligible crime victims.

"This funding through the Victims of Crime Act is a huge help to West Virginia," said Rahall. "This money will be used to help crime victims in West Virginia recover from the crimes that affected their lives." The grant is for a total of $2,621,000. The Crime Victims Fund supports community-based organizations that serve crime victims.

"This money is crucial to our local organizations and I applaud the Department of Justice for sending this grant to West Virginia," said Rahall. "The money in the VOCA fund comes from the collection of Federal criminal fines. In other words, these programs are not funded by taxpayer dollars, but by people who have harmed others while committing a crime."

Similar funding has gone to family members of the September 11 attacks, victims of local robberies and other crime victims across the Nation.
