USPS Halting Proposed Changes To Mail Processing At Beckley Post Office

U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, D-WV, has received word from the United State Postal Service that any changes to mail processing at the Beckley Post Office have been put on hold.

The decision, according to Karen Schenck, USPS Appalachian District manager, comes in response to a request from Congressman Rahall and others to halt implementing any changes at the Beckley Post Office until it can re-examine the effects that realigning mail processing will have on mail delivery and customer service.

"We are in the process of determining the best way to evaluate the questions and reevaluate this proposal so that it answers all of your concerns and the concerns raised by others," Schenck said in a letter faxed to Congressman Rahall Thursday afternoon.

"This is excellent news for all who rely on the Beckley Post Office for their mail service, which includes their Congressional office," Rahall said. "I will continue to monitor this situation as the USPS begins its evaluation process and thank them for their prompt and favorable response to my request."

In February alone, the Beckley Post Office handled an average of 165,000 pieces of mail daily.

"Beckley is growing and economic development is on the rise, making it all the more important that our post office fully is productive and capable of handling increased mail distribution," Rahall said.
