Rahall Announces $3.475M For Mercer County Airport

U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, D-WV, a senior Democrat on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, announced today that the Mercer County Airport has been awarded a $3.475 million grant from the Department of Transportation to acquire aircraft rescue and fire fighting safety equipment, improve runway safety and improve the airport's terminal building.

"This grant is great news for the entire region that is served by the Bluefield/Mercer County Airport," Rahall said. "This airport is a vital regional link to our national transportation system and promotes business development in southern West Virginia's communities."

Congressman Rahall has gone to bat for local airports time and time again, as the Bush Administration has consistently attempted to cut funding for the Essential Air Service. He has also been a strong advocate for the restoration of the Mercer County airport's eligibility for this subsidization program since it was removed under a ruling by the Department of Transportation last year.

"I will fight, as I have in the past, to fund the EAS program at its authorized level and to help rural communities across the country keep their airports," Rahall said. "I congratulate Bluefield/Mercer Airport on its award and thank all of those involved in the day-to-day operations for their contributions to the economy of southern West Virginia."

Randall Earnest, manager at the Bluefield/Mercer County airport, thanked Congressman Rahall for his continued support and said the grant will play a large role in the airport's modernization efforts.

"We are extremely pleased with the award and we appreciate Congressman Rahall's assistance on our grants and for his work on trying to get our subsidies back," Earnest said. "This grant is going to make a big difference."
