Rahall: Fudges Creek Road Repair To Begin Within 30 Days

U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV) announced today that much-needed repairs to Fudges Creek Road in Ona, West Virginia will begin within 30 days, according to the West Virginia Department of Highways (DOH).

Rahall contacted the DOH after hearing reports of dangerous slippage conditions along Fudges Creek Road. He has requested that the agency take prompt action to repair the road and make public their maintenance schedules to alleviate the concerns of local residents.

Secretary of Transportation/Commissioner of Highways Paul A. Mattox, Jr. responded that the DOH is scheduled to begin construction on the road within 30 days, weather permitting.

"We cannot allow the safety of our highways to be compromised by the challenges of our rugged region," said Rahall. "I have been in contact with Secretary Mattox and representatives of the DOH, and they have assured me that every necessary action will be taken to protect the safety of the students and residents that travel Fudges Creek Road."

According to the Herald-Dispatch, a road slip last winter severely damaged parts of Fudges Creek Road, leaving only one of the road's two lanes navigable. Although the DOH was notified of the damage on February 1, to date, no maintenance or repairs have been made. Beginning this month, buses carrying students from Salt Rock Elementary, Barboursville Middle School, and Cabell Midland High School will travel the damaged road daily.

"With a new school year upon us, I will continue to closely monitor the repair and maintenance of Fudges Creek Road," added Rahall.
