Wireless, Wonderful West Virginia

During my time as your Representative in Congress I have focused my work towards the main goal of creating more jobs in West Virginia. That is why I am focusing on the "Three T's" - Technology, Tourism and Transportation - to promote economic growth and create jobs.

Over the past 10 years the Internet has become a crucial part of the business world. The advancements on the internet have helped businesses function smoother and with higher profits. At the same time, access to the Internet has grown throughout our region. One of the more recent advancements in gaining access to high speed internet is through a wireless connection.

The wireless Internet technology opens many doors for economic growth in West Virginia. It is widely noted that our new young businessmen and businesswomen work with the Internet all the time. By having locations where people can connect to the Internet wirelessly, we are creating an atmosphere that is intriguing to young people and businesses.

I applaud Huntington and Mayor David Felinton for exploring the possibility of wireless Internet in Huntington. Huntington currently has wireless "hotspots" throughout the town, but they are looking into the possibility of expanding. These hotspots are usually businesses, such as coffee shops, looking to attract additional customers.

I also want to encourage other towns and communities to investigate the options of wireless hotspots and services.

Tourism is one of our strongest economic pieces in Southern West Virginia. Many people, young and old, come to our area to explore the outdoors, raft on our rivers, ski down our mountains and get a taste of Appalachia. While many of them certainly want to get away from technology, there are still others who have a strong desire to have Internet access at all times.

Through advancement in wireless technology we can offer wireless Internet at hotspots for our tourists. Our local businesses, such as restaurants, ski lodges, and downtown shopping areas could give residents and tourists access to the Internet. This would surely encourage tourists to come back for future vacations, and equally as important it would create a place for West Virginians to use the Internet. Additionally, the word of mouth created from the technology around our area will increase the number of tourists and businesses interested in Southern West Virginia.

It is widely agreed that advancement in wireless technology will bring more businesses and young people to an area. More tourism and more technology create more jobs for West Virginians. We have an opportunity to be ahead of the fold in this area. Therefore, I am encouraging our local communities to look into the possibility of wireless Internet access.
