WASHINGTON – Rep. Adam Putnam (R-FL), Chairman of the House Republican Conference, today commented on a new Gallup poll showing that a majority of the American people favor Republican-led domestic energy reforms to combat soaring energy prices:
“Over the last few days, House Republicans have been visiting gas stations nationwide, talking with commuters and truckers about the meaningful energy solutions we unveiled last week to lower prices, create jobs, and grow our economy. This new Gallup poll provides further evidence that these are exactly the kind of short and long-term energy initiatives that the American people support.
“To date, however, Democrats in Washington have resisted these sensible reforms, voting down any attempts by House Republicans to bring up measures that would boost domestic energy production. It takes an abundance of hypocrisy – and a total lack of common sense – for Democrat leaders to promise everything under the sun, including lower gas prices and a long-term plan to achieve energy independence, and then crack down on bipartisan efforts to actually achieve these goals.
“The time for these ideas has come. The Pelosi Premium’s impact is being felt beyond the pain at the pump. Indeed, this poll comes just days after a holiday weekend that saw Americans traveling by car in record low numbers. This, in addition to reports of fuel siphoning, cutbacks to essential services, and trips across the Mexican border for cheaper diesel, should be more than enough to prod Democrats in Washington to join House Republicans in implementing real solutions to our energy crisis.”
