iraq.jpg"The war in Iraq was a bad idea from the beginning. It is time to bring our troops home." -Congressman Tom Udall

When President Bush took America to war in Iraq, we were told that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, that the American taxpayer would not be burdened with high costs and that the war would be quick and easy. I opposed the war then, and I oppose it now. Today, we have found no WMDs in Iraq; we have lost the respect of much of the world; and, we are caught in another nation's civil war. Still, the president continues with his failed policy.

After visiting Iraq, I called for a phased redeployment by the end of 2006. Unfortunately, that time has come and gone. We have lost more than 4,000 American troops, almost 100,000 Iraqi civilians are dead and more than 2 million Iraqis have been displaced. New Mexico alone has seen more than three dozen deaths and more than 260 casualties. Our ground forces have been seriously exhausted, with troops serving three and four tours of duty.

The House of Representatives has voted again and again for a new direction in Iraq.  It’s time for the president to listen.  It’s time to bring our troops home.
