Marathon County is located in north central Wisconsin and is the number one ranking dairy producing county in the state and the leading county in the nation for ginseng production.

Two years after Wisconsin statehood, Marathon County was created in 1850 from a then larger county called Portage. Originally, it encompassed all of what are now Marathon, Lincoln, and Oneida Counties and parts of others. 

The county seat is Wausau.
