Taylor County is located in west central Wisconsin and was created in 1875 from Chippewa, Clark, Lincoln, and Marathon Counties.  The origin of naming the county Taylor varies with different sources.  Some say the county was named after William R. Taylor, the Governor of Wisconsin at the time the county was created.  Other sources say the county was named after David Taylor of Sheboygan, a prominent jurist at the time of the county's organization and later State Supreme Court Justice.

The county seat is Medford.
