Tips for Tourists

·       Grid System - The streets of Washington D.C. are organized on a "grid" system. Streets that run east-to-west generally are designated by letters, while streets that run north-to-south generally are designated by numbers. The Capitol serves as the starting point for this street system. Additional streets run diagonally throughout the city; these streets often are named after states. A good map is recommended to help you navigate through the city.

·       Quadrants - It is also important to know that Washington D.C. is divided into four quadrants: northeast, southeast, southwest & northwest. Accordingly, all addresses end in one of the following designations: NE, SE, SW, and NW.

·       Security – Be prepared for more restricted security screening for the sites you plan to visit. Generally, most security regulations prohibit book bags, backpacks, aerosol sprays, and any pointed or sharp objects.

·       Comfortable Walking Shoes – Distances between sites are greater than they appear on a map. In addition you will do plenty of walking when exploring the major museums. My best advice is to wear comfortable walking shoes. Your feet will thank you later.

·       Driving vs. Metro System – Between rush-hour traffic and few central parking facilities, your most effective choice for transportation in and out of Washington, D.C. is to use the Metrorail System. Parking tickets in the city are very expensive and parking in restricted areas could cause your vehicle to be towed.

·       Prepare for the Summer Heat – If you are planning your visit for sometime between May and September, you can expect hot, hazy, and humid weather, especially during the months of July and August. Check the weather before your trip and pack accordingly. It is also a good idea to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration or heat stroke.
