Academy Nominations

As a Member of Congress, I have the pleasure of nominating students from the Third Congressional District to each of the United States Service Academies:

U.S. Military
Academy
845-938-4041

U.S. Naval
Academy
410-293-4361

U.S. Merchant
Marine Academy
516-773-5391

U.S. Air Force
Academy
800-443-9266

Each of these academies have admissions offices that can provide you with detailed brochures. The links for each service academy can provide information about deadlines and any other application requirements.

Basic Eligibility
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Legal resident of the 3 rd Congressional District of NY
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Not older than 23 years of age on July 1 of the year entering the academy
  • Single, unmarried
  • Not pregnant
  • No dependants

A student interested in gaining a nomination to one of these academies should begin the process by writing to their U.S. Congressman or U.S. Senator during the spring of their junior year requesting a nomination to a specific academy. An example of the format of this letter is included in each of the academies school brochures.

In response to the student's letter of interest, they will receive a packet of information that must be completed and returned, to me, by a predetermined date in the fall. The information required is similar to that required by a college including: teacher and character recommendations, a high school transcript and a recent photograph. Please note that each student should also notify the academy of their interest in gaining admittance.

In December of the year that they apply, my Military Academy Selection Committee will interview each of the potential nominees. Upon completion of this screening process and after a careful evaluation of each of the candidates files, I will make final determinations as to the nominees. Please keep in mind that a congressional nomination does not guarantee admittance. The final appointment decision rests solely with the academy.

I hope this information is helpful to you. If I may be of service or if you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 516-541-4225 or 631-541-4225.

The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) is the only U.S. Service Academy that does not required a congressional nomination or appointment to attend it. For information about USCGA, you may write to:
