Undeliverable Checks Waiting for 1,300 Rhode Islanders

October 27, 2008

Pawtucket, RI – The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a list of Rhode Islanders who are due tax refunds and/or economic stimulus checks but cannot be found. The IRS mailed checks to Rhode Islanders but the checks returned by the U.S. Postal Service due to mailing address errors.  The list is attached.

Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy urged Rhode Islanders to check the list, whether for themselves or for family members and friends.

“There are more than 1,000 Rhode Islanders for whom the IRS is holding tax refunds and checks.  The IRS simply needs updated address information to deliver this money that can certainly go a long way for many right now.  Taxpayers due an undeliverable economic stimulus payment must update their addresses by November 28, 2008 to ensure the IRS can reissue the stimulus check, which must be mailed by the deadline of December 31, 2008,” said Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy.

To check that status of a tax refund check and update an address, go to www.irs.gov and click on Where’s My Refund.  Those without internet access can call 1-800-829-1040 to check on a missing refund.

Taxpayers who did not receive their anticipated economic stimulus payment can use Where’s My Stimulus Payment? on www.irs.gov to check on the status of the missing stimulus payment and update their addresses if necessary. Economic stimulus claimants without internet access can call 1-866-234-2942 to check on a missing payment.
