Internships

Internships provide valuable opportunities to learn about the workings of a Congressional office and the legislative process in general. Congressman Rahall provides internship opportunities in the fall, spring, and summer for students currently enrolled in college and recent college graduates

Internships last from two weeks to eight weeks, depending on the availability of the position and the prospective intern. Internships are available for the Washington, D.C. office, as well as in any of the four district offices.  Priority is given to students from West Virginia, although all interested students are encouraged to apply.

Intern responsibilities fall within a wide range of categories. Typical intern duties include handling constituent mail, fielding constituent phone calls, performing research, and attending congressional hearings.

Interested students should send a cover letter, a copy of their resume, including grade point average, and two letters of recommendation--one academic and one work--related to Congressman Rahall's Washington, DC office at the address below:

Successful applicants possess good writing and communication skills, a good GPA, and the ability to work well within a busy office environment. Applicants are encouraged to submit their application materials by October for spring internships, April for summer internships and July for fall internships. Decisions regarding spring interns will be made in November or December, summer intern decisions will be made in May, and decisions for fall interns will be made in mid-to-late August. Due to security procedures regarding correspondence entering the Capitol Hill complex, most packages are delayed up to two weeks longer than normal postal delivery. Please plan accordingly when submitting information for consideration.
