Mercer Island, WA, Aug 12 - Working Mother Media and Corporate Voices for Working Families announced their recognition today of Congressman Dave Reichert (WA-08) for improving the American quality of life through family-friendly work policies. The award, their inaugural “Best of Congress” award, highlights Reichert’s workplace practices and legislative initiatives in supporting working families and employing family-friendly policies in his own office.

“Dave’s ‘heart of a servant’ attitude comes through in his work and in his implementation of office policies for not only his own staff but for every worker in America,” said Sue Foy, a mother of two and also Reichert’s Deputy District Director. “So many families have unique situations and need flexibility in the workplace so they can both be there for their kids and have a successful career.  Dave understands this; he knows how important flexibility in the workplace is to creating a healthy working environment, both mentally and physically. After working for him in the Sheriff’s office and now in the Congressional office, I continue to work for Dave because he supports these ideals both in his personal office, in his work on legislation, and in the votes he takes as a representative of this district.”

Reichert was judged on his voting record, sponsored/cosponsored legislation and efforts to promote legislation that supports working families. From the magazine write-up:

What we love The former elected sheriff of Washington’s King County, he has distinguished himself as a leading voice against domestic violence.

Flex and Telecommuting Perks With a chief of staff who’s a single parent, a district director with a son who was deployed in Iraq and a deputy district director who has a child with developmental disabilities, it’s no surprise that Reichert’s office allows for very flexible schedules and provides technology so employees can work from home.

Children’s Health Champion In addition to voting for the expansion of SCHIP, he sponsored and voted for the Reichert Amendment, providing $2.5 million in grants to expand emergency care for children who need treatment for illnesses or injuries. He also founded and cochairs the Children’s Health Care Caucus, which informs other members of Congress about children’s health-care issues. Plus, proceeds from his firsthand account Chasing the Devil: My Twenty-Year Quest to Capture the Green River Killer are donated to the Pediatric Interim Care Center in Kent, WA.

Reichert is featured in the August/September 2008 issue of Working Mother Magazine, and will be recognized with the Best of Congress award on September 10 in Washington, DC. For more information visit www.workingmother.com or http://reichert.house.gov.
