WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman John P. Murtha, Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, announced today that the U.S. Navy has awarded a contract to Shumar Industries of Grindstone, Fayette County.  The contract is for the assembly, manufacture, and delivery of Turret Gunner Counter Sniper Protection Systems. 

The Turret Gunner Counter Sniper Protection System was designed by the Air Force, and is mounted on top of military vehicles to protect Air Force Security Forces in Iraq from the threat of snipers and explosives.

Current funding available for the program is approximately $1.2 million.  The Navy’s announcement today has a potential value of $6.1 million.
