Earned Income Tax Credit Information PDF Print

Every year, working families and individuals in Sacramento and across the nation qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), yet statistics show that roughly 25% of eligible families fail to claim this tax credit. The EITC is a refundable credit for people who work but do not earn high incomes. Qualifying individuals and families could receive a tax credit of up to $4,700.

Established in 1975, the EITC has been a tool to aid working families and individuals. More than 22.4 million taxpayers received more than $43.7 billion in EITC on their 2006 federal tax returns. Additionally, those taxpayers whose annual income is less than $40,000 can get help through a Free Income Tax Preparation service that is being offered by the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance. Qualification criteria for the Earned Income Tax Credit:

Generally, a taxpayer may be able to take the credit for tax year 2007 if the taxpayer:

  • Has more than one qualifying child and earns less than $37,783 ($39,783 if married filing jointly
  • Has one qualifying child and earns less than $33,241 ($35,241 if married filing jointly), or
  • Does not have a qualifying child and earns less than $12,590 ($14,590 if married filing jointly).

Eligible applicants should bring:

  • W-2 Forms for all jobs worked in the year 2007
  • Social Security cards for all persons on tax return
  • Valid picture ID
  • 1099-G form if you received unemployment insurance benefits in 2007
  • 1099-INT if you received bank interest in 2007
  • Any statements you received from a mortgage company during 2007
  • A copy of your 2006 tax return if you have one
