Congressional Art Competition - 2008 Artistic Discovery Winner
I am proud to announce the winner of the 17th Congressional District of the Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery: Julianna Moreno of San Benito High School!
This year marks the 27th anniversary of this arts competition for high school students. Fourteen schools were represented in the competition. A total of 30 pieces of art were submitted for judging by local artist Aaron Johnson.
Juliann's winning piece of art, "Flower Girl", will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, DC. starting in July.
Second place honors went to Harbor High School senior Rachel Byers. Her work, “Evanzeye II,” will hang in Rep. Farr’s Washington office for a year. Third place honors went to Santa Cruz Waldorf High School freshman Molly Brown, whose work, “Self Portrait and Dictionary,” will be displayed in Rep. Farr’s Santa Cruz district office.
Students were allowed to submit various styles and types of art, ranging from paintings and drawings to photography and mixed media pieces. The winners were determined using criteria based on originality, skill of execution, excellence in use of materials and conceptual strength of project.
I want to express my gratitude to competition judge Aaron Johnson. I look forward to seeing the winning artwork in the Capitol Building and my offices throughout the coming year!
