Honor our Veterans’ Sacrifices

Honor our Veterans’ Sacrifices

As we enter December, the final month of the first session of the 110th Congress is upon us.  Deadlines are fast approaching on several important issues that must be addressed.  Perhaps the most pressing of these are the 11 appropriations bills that have yet to be signed into law.

The debate over how much money to spend is important.  Many of us are continuing to fight to ensure that the federal government is spending taxpayer dollars as wisely as possible.  There are others who have decided to push for exorbitant spending packages that expand government bureaucracy by billions while offering only tax hikes to pay for them.  This is not fiscal responsibility; it is a bloated federal budget and it leaves American taxpayers responsible to carry the burden.  I have pledged to stand with many of my colleagues and the President to oppose out-of-control spending.

There is one spending bill, however, that everyone should agree must be passed immediately.  The Veterans appropriations bill passed the House and the Senate months ago with overwhelming support, and yet it has not been sent to the President for his signature.  While there have been cynical attempts to couple the Veterans bill with other spending measures, our veterans and their families deserve funding with no strings attached.

During this holiday season, we will reflect on all that we are thankful for and the many blessings America provides.  Most notably, we will remember the millions of servicemen and women and their families who sacrifice each day to defend our freedoms and protect our homeland.  Let’s honor their sacrifice by sending a clean Veterans funding bill to the President’s desk.
