Wilson Agenda for the 110th Congress

  • National Security – remain on the offense in the Global War on Terrorism; accelerate training of Iraqi and Afghani security forces
  • Education Policy – reauthorize Higher Education Act and No Child Left Behind
  • Economy – continue to advocate for pro-growth, fiscally responsible policies
  • Healthcare – push for Association Health Plans, Health Savings Accounts, and implementation of health IT; support stronger patient-focused reforms
  • Energy – support all sources of alternative fuels; utilize natural resources; revamp our energy infrastructure and increase domestic production of oil and natural gas
  • Immigration – enforce the laws we have on the books; secure our nation’s borders
  • Veterans – respect our nation’s veterans by ensuring they receive quality health care and benefits that reflect their sacrifice
  • Foreign Affairs – working with allies around the world to promote peace and freedom

I would like to take this opportunity to share with you my goals in Congress. While the dynamic in Washington has changed, I am confident my colleagues and I can continue to produce real results for the American people.

The United States must remain on the offense in the Global War on Terrorism. It is no accident that we have not been attacked in more than 6 years. Many Americans have indicated their resolve to win the War in Iraq, the War in Afghanistan, and protect American families. I support these goals and our brave troops in that endeavor.

It is time, however, for the Iraqi government to step up and show they are making real, tangible progress toward full independence. The surge of American forces last year has aided our Iraqi allies in growing their security forces and in reaching tangible political achievements. However, Congress and the Bush Administration must demand the Iraqis continue to do more to train their security forces so our men and women can return home safely. We must continue to put the necessary pressure on the Iraqi government to pay the financial burden for their own reconstruction.

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) is up for reauthorization this year. There has been much debate regarding the merits of NCLB, and I will be looking to you in the coming months for guidance on how to proceed.

Following the 2003 tax cuts, our economy grew at historic levels. Unfortunately, in recent months, our economy has slowed down due to a number of different factors. In efforts to strengthen our economy, I remain committed to keeping taxes low while providing the proper level of oversight and tools necessary for the American people to build upon the proven strength of the free market. American families deserve to keep their hard-earned money, not have it frivolously spent in Washington.

I remain committed to making healthcare accessible and affordable for all American families. Toward this end, I will continue working toward the expansion of Association Health Plans, Health Savings Accounts, and new innovative technologies to rein in the cost of health care. Americans deserve affordable healthcare, and we can make that a reality for every American if we focus on patient-centered solutions not greater government interference.

Our nation’s national security is tied closely with our energy security and energy independence. As energy prices continue to climb, we need to have a comprehensive approach to reducing the price at the pump while investing in our natural resources, domestic production and refining capabilities, and alternative fuel sources.
