Congressman Knollenberg speaks about legislation to lower gas prices
High gas prices are squeezing our families here in Oakland County and around the country, they’re hurting our auto industry, and they’re hurting our economy. This is completely unacceptable to me. I drive and fill up my gas tank just like you do, and I can’t believe how quickly these prices have risen.
That’s why I have put forth a plan to help ease the pain at the pump. It’s based on simple economics. Supply and demand control everything, and they explain how gas rose to these outrageous prices we’re paying at the pump.

THE PROBLEM
 Many factors have decreased the supply of oil available and
dramatically increased the demand for it. As a result, gas prices are
unacceptably high today. Among the contributing factors:

China and India’s growing economies are demanding much more oil than ever before.
- We haven’t built a new
refinery in this country since the 70s. But all the while, our
population gas grown and so has the number of cars on the road… that’s
grown exponentially.
I’ve been saying for years that we needed to take action on this
issue. But too many in Congress and in Washington were short-sighted
on this issue.

THE SOLUTION
 We need to act now, in a serious, thoughtful, and productive way, to bring down the price of gas. There are only two ways to do this: increase the supply or decrease the demand.
My view is that we must do both – and we need to do both right now. Our families and our economy can’t afford $4 a gallon gas any longer.
My plan will bring down the price of gas, invest in alternative fuels that are better for our environment, and help strengthen our economy and our safety for years to come.
