Great Lakes & Environment

Congressman Knollenberg is an environmentalist. Protecting, preserving, and providing for the health of our environment is one of his top priorities. The state of Michigan is blessed to possess vast expanses of natural beauty. Since coming to Congress, Knollenberg has worked to ensure that this natural beauty is maintained and restored. The Great Lakes are one of the defining characteristics of our state, and Congressman Knollenberg believes it is his duty to protect these natural treasures.

This is why Knollenberg has and will continue to support measures that keep the Great Lakes safe and clean. As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Knollenberg has a unique opportunity to see that important environmental protection programs are adequately funded. For example, he has supported measures to provide funding to clean up sediment in the Great Lakes. Furthermore, he has supported measures that would implement fish and wildlife restoration in the Great Lakes. Additionally, invasive species are a severe problem and must be addressed, especially in the Great Lakes. Knollenberg has cosponsored legislation that would authorize comprehensive research into methods to prevent, control, and eradicate aquatic invasive species. He believes it is imperative that Congress continues to address the health of the Great Lakes and the quality of water nationwide.

Congressman Knollenberg has also strongly supported funding for grants that help local communities make infrastructure improvements to ensure our drinking water is safe and clean. He has supported grants that help local communities build and upgrade wastewater treatment facilities to prevent our waterways from being polluted. And Congressman Knollenberg has secured federal funds to clean up the Rouge River. These funds have significantly contributed to the vastly improved quality of the Rouge's water.
