Auto Industry

Congressman Knollenberg represents the heart of car country in Congress. With a Big Three automaker, scores of tier one suppliers, and hundreds of smaller suppliers in his district, Congressman Knollenberg has taken a leadership role on defending the interests of the auto industry in the nation’s capital. In 2003, he stood up to President Bush and led the fight in Washington to successfully repeal the Bush Administration’s steel tariffs that were driving up the costs of auto manufacturing and hurting Michigan’s economy. In 2006, Knollenberg authored a new law to crack down on the counterfeiting of auto parts. The Knollenberg anti-counterfeiting law was a top priority of Oakland County auto suppliers and The United States Chamber of Commerce.

Congressman Knollenberg is an authoritative voice on energy policies that directly impact GM, Ford, Chrysler and their suppliers. He is a strong opponent of arbitrary fuel economy increases that would cost Michigan jobs. As an alternative, Knollenberg believes we can reduce our dependence on Middle East oil and lower CO2 emissions by promoting alternative fuel technology. He is supportive of efforts to increase the use of clean diesel, ethanol, and electric powered vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

Knollenberg’s efforts on behalf of the auto industry have earned him honors from The National Association of Manufacturers and The Motor Equipment Manufacturers Association. There is no greater priority for Congressman Knollenberg than looking after the well being of the domestic auto industry.
