U.S. Service Academies 


 

Each year, I make nominations to the U.S. Service Academies for interested Kansas students. The academies include:

 

The United States Military Academy
West Point, New York

 

The United States Naval Academy
Annapolis, Maryland

 

The United States Air Force Academy
Colorado Springs, Colorado

 

The United States Merchant Marine Academy
Kings Point, New York

 

Eligibility:

 

Each applicant for a nomination must meet the following requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission to an academy:

 

  •  Age: Be at least 17 years old but not have passed their 23rd birthday.
  •  Citizenship: Be a U.S. citizen.
  •  Marital Status: Be unmarried, not pregnant and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.
  •  Residency: Applicants applying through Congressman Jerry Moran must legally reside within the First Congressional District of Kansas.

 

 

Selections are based on:

 

  • SAT or ACT test scores
  • Class rank
  • Grade point average
  • School records
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Leadership potential
  • Motivation
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Interview evaluations.

 

 

If nominated, applicants then must meet the individual admission requirements of each academy. The academies will make the final decision on who will receive an appointment of admission.

The application deadline for this year is September 15, 2008.  Applicants will be interviewed on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson.
