High Energy Prices

High fuel prices are hurting all Kansans. Every day, I hear from Kansans who are having to make tough choices about how to spend their hard earned money - on an extra gallon of gas or a gallon of milk at the grocery store. No one should be put in that situation and it is past time for Congress to put partisan politics aside and work together to bring relief to American families and businesses.

The energy challenge is complex and requires a diverse solution of developing all available energy resources. While the demand for energy has continued to increase over the years, there has been no significant change in our domestic supply. We must lift federal bans on oil and natural gas exploration in Alaska and off our coasts to increase our domestic supply.

Expanded production of domestic oil and natural gas resources alone cannot solve this problem. The solution must also include initiatives to support alternative energy like solar, wind, geothermal, hydro-electric and nuclear power, as well as biofuels made in states like Kansas. Energy development must also be accompanied by energy conservation. We must encourage more efficient vehicles and construction of energy conserving buildings.

Over the years, I have supported efforts to increase the supply of traditional and renewable energy so that prices would remain affordable. Some of the common sense energy proposals I have supported include:

• Lifting the federal ban on natural gas exploration and production off our coasts.

• Opening leasing for oil and gas in 8.3 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico, including 5.8 million acres that had previously been off limits.

• Establishing a competitive oil and gas leasing program that would result in an environmentally sound program for the exploration, development, and production of the oil and gas resources in Alaska.

• Providing coastal states with incentives to allow offshore oil and natural gas exploration while protecting the environment.

• Promoting increased oil and gas production, renewable and alternative energies, as well as conservation and research of new energy technologies.

• Promoting alternative sources of energy such as hydropower and nuclear.

• Providing incentives for research and development of new energy technologies.

• Increasing production of biofuels.

• Providing incentives for the production of wind energy.

• Providing incentives for the development and installation of solar energy equipment.

• Increasing the use of alternative fuels such as clean coal-to-liquids.
