Rep. Jefferson works to protect middle-class families

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 24, 2008

Washington, D.C.— Today, Congressman Jefferson stood up for middle-class families and voted to protect them from the Alternative Minimum Tax.

“This bill will provide tax relief to well over 25 million middle class families in this nation from being unfairly hit with the alternative minimum tax by increasing the AMT exemption amount to just under 70,000 for joint filers and a little over 45,000 for individual filers,” said Jefferson. “It is a burdensome tax to pay when our middle class is getting hit from all sides in our struggling economy.”

The AMT was originally created in the Tax Reform Act of 1969 to target some of the highest income households that were paying little to no income tax due to eligibility for tax benefits. It was never created to adjust for inflation and has since come to impact middle class taxpayers.
