Congressman Steny H. Hoyer of Mechanicsville represents Maryland's Fifth Congressional District, which includes Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties and portions of Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties. As your representative in the United States Congress, Congressman Hoyer works hard to improve the lives of you and your family and keep Maryland a great place to live, work, and go to school.

In addition to representing Maryland’s Fifth District, Congressman Hoyer was chosen by his House colleagues in 2006 as the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives. This prestigious position makes him the second-highest ranking Member of the House and the highest ranking Member of Congress ever from the State of Maryland. As Majority Leader, Congressman Hoyer is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the House Floor as well as scheduling legislation to be voted on by the full House.

Congressman Hoyer began his career in public service at the age of 27 when he won a seat in the Maryland State Senate. Just a few years later, at the age of 35, Mr. Hoyer was elected President of the Senate, the youngest ever in state history. Now serving his 14th term in Congress, he also became the longest-serving Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland on June 4, 2007.

Some of the issues that Congressman Hoyer has focused on during his career are education, protecting the environment, health care, and civil rights. He is also a widely respected voice on foreign policy and international affairs. Among his most significant achievements in Congress include: authoring the Americans With Disabilities Act, landmark legislation that has helped millions of disabled Americans achieve independence; helping to pass the Help America Vote Act to improve the federal election process; and securing federal support for communities across the 5th District.

Family is also something that is very important to Congressman Hoyer. He and his wife, the late Judith Pickett Hoyer, have three daughters, Susan, Stefany and Anne; three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
